What is Dengue?

Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, caused by the by infection with any of the four serotypes of DENV (DENV-1 to DENV-4). [1]


DENV infection can cause several symptoms and it is these symptoms that classify the disease as classic dengue and severe dengue. [1]


ClASSIC DENGUE OR SIMPLY DENGUE

Symptoms of classic dengue fever include fever, nausea, vomiting, rashes, aches and pains, and discomforts, and the patient's clinical condition is very variable. [1]

The first manifestation is high fever (39° to 40°), of sudden onset, followed by pain of Head, Myalgia, Prostration, Arthralgia, Anorexia, Asthenia, retro-orbital pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, and skin pruritus. Abdominal pain can also occur mainly in children. [1]

The disease has an average duration of 5 to 7 days and treatment consists of relieving symptoms through the administration of medications and hydration. With the disappearance of fever, there may also be a decrease in other symptoms, which may fatigue persists for a few more days. [1]


SEVERE DENGUE OR DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER

The initial symptoms of severe dengue are similar to those of classic dengue, but these evolve Quickly, featuring: [1]

High fever, hemorrhage (caused, among other factors, by a reduction in the number of platelets in the blood), liver enlargement, insufficiency circulatory and plasma leakage, which may lead to shock and/or fluid buildup with or without respiratory distress. In the most severe cases, Shock usually occurs between the 3rd and 7th day of illness. [1]

Therefore, at the first sign of serious illness, the patient should be closely monitored by a doctor and/or even hospitalized, in order to if you avoid complications. [1]

Beyond dengue:
zika, chikungunya and
fever yellow

Fever, body ache, headache, lack of appetite, and diarrhea are common symptoms of dengue, zika and chikungunya, and that can compromise the diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Therefore, recognizing the Specific symptoms of each of these diseases is very important.
